Prayer is a request, or invocation outwardly addressed to the god or goddess of one’s own understanding in the context of worship. It works not because there’s actually a “god” on high surrounded by Angels giving heed to your prayer, but because of your belief in prayer.
Your belief creates your reality at every corner, and this applies throughout all vibrational levels. When a person believes in prayer having an effect in their life, things can come to pass through their belief manifesting it for them, thus further validating their belief in it. In all instances it’s the individual sponsoring their own breakthrough.
Freewill is the nature of consciousness, and belief is the prerequisite for the manifestation of consciousness. No thing can trump one’s own freewill, so it’s the individual that must bring about their own “salvation” so-to-speak. Just to be Frank there is no God lording over any individual that’s hearing and granting any prayers or supplications. I’m not playing any religious games here, I and speaking truth to power.
Prayer has just as much power as someone who doesn’t believe in a god but simply believes in themselves, and in many cases the latter is actually more productive as no waisted energy is involved and channeled outside of themselves. Religion is instrumental in bringing about certain breakthroughs in one’s own life because of the collective re enforcement of belief systems through a church, synagogue, or mosque. And it’s the validation of one’s own belief systems by another or group that can further validate one’s own beliefs. This doesn’t mean that their beliefs actually hold true validity, but that they believe enough for them to appear as such.
